Hailed by The New York Times as “ardent and mellifluous” as well as a “clear-voiced tenor”, John Tiranno’s recent and upcoming engagements include Handel’s Messiah and Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette with the Santa Fe Symphony, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and Classical Christmas Concerts with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Joann Falletta, the role of Man 1 in Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s opera Frida with Opera Southwest and El Paso Opera, and performances of Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer and Schumann’s Dichterliebe with ChatterABQ. He had numerous performances canceled or postponed in 2020 due to COVID-19, including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Music in the Mountains in Durango, CO and Dvorak’s Stabat Mater with the Santa Fe Community Orchestra.

2019 appearances included a return to New York City to sing Haydn’s Harmoniemesse with Concerts at St. Ignatius (formerly Sacred Music in a Sacred Space), multiple performances of Mahler’s song cycle Das Lied von der Erde with ChatterAQB, and Opera Southwest’s New Year’s Eve Gala. 2018 performances included his debut with the Santa Fe Symphony as tenor soloist in Handel’s Messiah, as well as the creation of the Young-Tiranno Duo where he performed recitals & concerts throughout the United States with his wife, violinist & pianist Elizabeth Young.

2017 appearances included the world premiere of Gisle Kverndokk’s opera Upon this handful of Earth (a co-production between Sacred Music in a Sacred Space and the New York Opera Society), Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (Greenwich Village Orchestra), and a return to Carnegie Hall to sing Handel’s Messiah (Masterwork Chorus).

Other credits include Berlioz's Requiem (La Jolla Symphony & Chorus), Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 and Paul Moravec’s The Blizzard Voices (Oratorio Society of New York), Mozart’s Requiem, Bach's B minor Mass, and U.S. premiere of Juraj Filas’ Oratio Spei – Requiem (Sacred Music in a Sacred Space), Handel’s Messiah (Dayton Philharmonic), Bach’s St. John Passion (with Kent Tritle at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine), Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle (The Dessoff Choirs), Richard Strauss' Deutsche Motette (Musica Sacra), Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance (Opera Roanoke), the roles of Moussah and Ferkamnat in Fervaal (American Symphony Orchestra), Lord Tolloller in Iolanthe (Nashville Opera), Il Maestro delle Acque in La Nave (Teatro Grattacielo), and Beppe in Pagliacci (New York Grand Opera).

Additional international appearances include his European debut in Rome singing the Saint Saëns Requiem (Festival Internazionale di Musica e Arte Sacra), his South American debut in São Paulo singing Mozart’s Missa in C (at Auditório Ibirapuera), Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 in Ontario, Canada (Brott Music Festival), and recitals at King Abdullah University of Science & Technology in Jedda, Saudi Arabia. Other world premiere performances include creating two additional roles for Kverndokk - Trouble in Max and Moritz and the Man in the Mirror in Supersize Girl (both with New York Opera Society), as well as singing the world premiere of Gregory Walker’s The Passion According to St. Toscanini (Boulder Philharmonic).
